Why Africa and Nigeria

Africa’s contribution to the production and consumption of natural rubber is still not significant as the continent only accounts for 10% of world supplies and with about 10.2% production growth rate. This is against 87% supply from Asia with abound 4.9% production growth rate and 8.4% consumption growth rate (IRSG, 2022a). The main rubber producers in Africa are Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana, Gabon, Guinea and Congo. Cote d’Ivoire has the largest rubber-growing area in Africa and the fastest-growing economy in the West-African region. Cote d’Ivoire attracts global commodities traders and processors to tap the potential of rapidly expanded production capacity. With sustained production growth expected from this region, Cote d’Ivoire has great potential of creating sustainable value addition and leading Africa’s transition to a major rubber sourcing hub.

Cote d’Ivoire presents a model example of a unique position to harness Africa’s strengths, and to tap and strengthen global trade, Agri-tech innovations, and sustainable rubber cultivation to make inclusive sustainable growth a reality.

Nigeria has in recent past witnessed a decline in its natural rubber production. However, this decline has been considerably reversed. Nigeria’s ranking has changed from 4th to 2nd position among Africa natural rubber producing countries.
